Wilmont over the moon

The Glebe played Coagh on Tuesday night in the cup and earned their place in the next round draw thanks to a Ricky Dunlop goal. Next up was Queen’s away in the league and although The Dub is never an easy place to go to, Wilmont’s men were clinical, winning 3-0 thanks to a deflection and two Ian Christie goals. The week was completed with the news that they had drawn Linfield in the second round of the JBE League Cup.

“It was a brilliant result for us against Queen’s,” said Wilmont. “It was like day and night compared to our performance on Tuesday night against Coagh. We were poor then but mananged to do enough to get us into the second round Draw.

“On Saturday we were first class. Chris Fullerton made a great save at nil nil to keep us in the game and then Ian Christie scored a really great goal.

“We went in a half time and I said to the lads that they would come at us in the first 15 minutes of the second half. We sat in and soaked up the pressure and then we scored a couple more goals although one was deflected in by their player. The only downside was that Peter Kennoway was sent off, although I don’t think it was a red card. He’ll now be out for Friday night’s Steele & Sons game but I will hopefully have him for next Tuesday away to Linfield.

“We were brilliant against Queens and need to keep playing like that and if we do things will go well for us.”

Having put all three points in the bag, the day got even better for Wilmont and his troops as they travelled home from Belfast.

“The draw was on the radio on the bus on the way home and we had hoped we would get Linfield. It is a dream draw and you’ve no idea how much it means to us all. It’s a great thing for all the players to be going to Windsor Park and for me as a manager it’s going to be a brilliant experience.

“Linfield are the biggest club in the country and aIts a player you always aspire to play against the top sides. It’s brilliant for us as playing staff and management but I’m more delighted for all the people who work so hard behind the scenes at the club.

“It’s a pity it wasn’t a Saturday and that way more people could come along. We could have also made it a real day for the players with a team breakfast etc but we just have to make it the best experience possible and go there and play with pride and commitment. Not too many can say they have gone and played a competitive game against Linfield so I just hope all the lads make the best of the opportunity.

“Team spirit is good at the moment and I couldn’t have had a better start to the season than this. We just need to keep doing what we are doing and take it each game at a time.”
