Wilkinson wins again as superb season continues

Paul Wilkinson took a well deserved win at the latest West Down Wheelers’ race to continue a superb season.

John Clyde finished a close second, while TVR rider David McKnight came in third and was followed by Mark Alexander in fourth.

It was a tough course, with four laps of a hilly circuit and only a quarter of the riders who started the race managed to finish it.

It was not the perfect race as the Dromara contingent decided to give it a miss so there were only two scratch riders, Davy and Paul Wilkinson.

They went with the A3 group alongside Mark and Jonny Kernaghan.

Starting at the Quarry, the riders headed for Balievey crossroads turning left out to the Corbet, before turning left again and heading straight out to the Gallbog crossroads.

The circuit then went left again past Garvaghy Post Office and up to the Start/Finish line.

The handicap from limit to the big A4 group was seven minutes and then back to scratch a further two mins.

This allowed the five scratch riders to gain even more on their two minute handicap.

The A4 group did not ride as well as they should have to keep the scratch group away.

It was anything but organised and this played into the five scratch riders hands as they caught the leaders on the second lap, attacked and blew the group to pieces.

Four riders who deserve a mention as they rode well all night are Allister McCourt, Dave Friz and Matt McKinstry (all West Down Wheelers) and Gavin Clarke of TVR.

Mark Alexander and Jonny Kernaghan , two riders who do hardly any training, also rode superb throughout the race.

A 10 mile TT will be held on Rathfriland Rd this week and then this Thursday June 4 at 7pm there is a 10 mile TT on Warrenpoint rd for the Eric Maxwell Memorial.

This Saturday there are seven riders heading to Bishop’s Court race track .
