West Down Wheelers compete in Hugo Loughran GP

ON Friday May 3 Island Wheelers promoted the Hugo Loughran GP at Derrytrask, there were two races on offer for A3 and A4 riders.

Four members of West down Wheelers travelled to take part, Davy Cartmill, Matt McKinstry and Clive Adamson rode in the A4 race and Paul Wilkinson in the A3.

And what a night’s racing it was, the pace in both races was fast and furious throughout. It was a tactical game as the narrow roads made hazardous with outbursts of torrential rain meant that it was hard to get through in order to go free of the bunch in the 6.4 mile circuit.

Many riders found themselves boxed in and both races came down to a bunch sprint. Davy, Matt and Clive rode strongly throughout the race and were active at the front reeling in some of the early breakaways and on the later stages of the last lap making a number of their attacks, they did very well and got into position for the sprint finish with Matt being the first wheeler across the line in the top 15.

Clive Adamson said the sprint was not for the faint hearted, it was very hairy but all three got round safe and well so a big well done to them.

In the A3 race Paul Wilkinson also rode very strong being involved in a number of breakaways, towards the end of the last lap he was in the leading pack and part of the charge for the sprint finish. All riders came home safe and well. The average speed for the A4 race was 24 mph and 25mph for the A3 race.
