WE'RE TOP OF THE WORLD!

BROTHERS DJ and Jonny Wilson are still finding it hard to believe that they are World Pairs champions after winning the title in Dumfries in Scotland.

It's the first time that the brothers have won the honour and they did so in dramatic style with a final shot victory over England in the decider.

DJ, the older of the two, said that he was relieved but overjoyed to take the title in the manner they did.

"There were eight games in our group so we had to play seven games," he said.

"We had to play Wales, Scotland and England on the Sunday so it's fair to say our hardest games came then. We needed to win all three too to make the final.

"We beat Wales so we had to play Scotland in our penultimate game. They had won five games out of five before playing us so we had to beat them and beat them well because of their superior shot difference.

"In the end we beat them 14-4 so that means we were well ahead of them, meaning all we had to do was to beat the English rink in our group which we did by three points."

There was almost an all-West Down clash in the final. In the other group Dessie Hamilton and Alan Johnston were well placed to reach the final, but in their final game against the other English pair they lost.

Dessie and Alan's opponents moved on to the final to play DJ and Jonny in the nailbiting climax to the final.

"In the early stages we were leading 6-2 but then England fought back to 6-5. We pushed on ahead to a 10-5 lead but the English pair were very good and bounced back again to pull level.

"Our final end was good and it all came down to the final shot. My wee brother had the last shot - he needed to draw it.

"It was tough to watch but it turned out to be a great shot - I don't think that I've ever sprinted down the mat as fast when he made it!

"We've both won a lot of Irish titles but nothing compares to being a World Champion - it was a proud moment for both of us."

Although it was a the first time that DJ and Jonny had won at this level they have taken part in the triples along with Richard Martin.

"Our only disappointment about the whole thing was that Richard wasn't there with us," DJ added.

"He's a genuinely nice guy though and when we rang to tell him we had won it he was over the moon for both of us."

It's back to the outdoor season next weekend for DJ and Jonny as Dunbarton open for the year before competitive action gets underway at the end of April.

"All of the lads are keen to repeat the feat of last season when we won the treble - to win a double treble would be amazing," DJ said.

"Last season we only lost once so if we could better that it would be the icing on the cake."
