An under-strength Banbridge 3rd XI were defeated 6-2 at home to Cookstown 3rds on Saturday.
Bann were missing players like the influential Andrew Doyle and veteran Douglas Anderson. They started off strongly and were unlucky not to take the lead when top-scorer Gareth Matthews went close after out-pacing several players and crashing a reverse stick shot off the upright.
Bann went on to miss a couple more opportunities before Cookstown took the lead with a strong finish. Cookstown’s extra quality in front of goal began to tell as they added two more goals before half time with a strong reverse shot and another nice finish into the roof of the net.
Banbridge came out battling in the second half and reduced the deficit when Craig Kennedy crashed a beautiful reverse into the top corner of the net. This goal seemed to be a wak-eup call for Cookstown though and they added three more goals in quick succession to take the score to 6-1.
Late on, Matthews took his season tally into double figures, adding a consolation goal with a cheeky finish. Cookstown could have added a lot more goals than the six they did manage, had it not been for some great play from young goalkeeper Luke Skillen. Next week sees the 3s take on Banbridge 4s @ Havelock in the league.
