U15s just get over the line

Bann U15s 29

Carrick U15s 27

BANN'S U15 side secured a narrow victory over a strong Carrick team in Saturday’s league encounter at Rifle Park.

Carrick looked sharper in the opening exchanges and they were quickly on the score sheet when some poor defensive tackling by the languid Bann team allowed Carrick to score two soft tries in quick succession.

Bann needed some inspiration and it was duly provided by centre James Waugh who broke through the Carrick defence to register Bann’s first score, Cameron Cromie adding the conversion.

From the re-start the Bann pack managed to retain possession and some good inter-play between wing forward Alexander Megaw and prop Thomas McRoberts resulted in Bann being awarded a penalty close to the visitors’ line. Quick thinking by Captain Matthew Beck resulted in him taking the penalty himself, barging over the line for Bann’s second score.

A third Bann try soon followed when Waugh sprinted past the Carrick defenders to score under the posts, Cromie adding the extras to give his team a 19-10 lead at the break.

During the second period further Bann scores followed with out-half Josh Cromie and Beck adding Bann’s fourth and fifth tries. Bann appeared to be coasting, but the resilient Carrick team had other ideas and two quick scores significantly reduced the deficit.

In the closing seconds of the match some sloppy defending by Bann enabled the Carrick winger to gather a loose ball and he sprinted past the Bann defenders to score in the corner.

The Carrick out-half had a difficult kick to tie the match, but fortunately for Bann his effort fell short and the referee blew the final whistle.

This was a good win but the Bann team did not play particularly well and there is room for improvement.
