Two Lisburn athletes receive top awards

Local City of Lisburn Athletics Club members Ella Armstrong and Bradley Mulholland have been named as the ‘firmus energy Athletes of the 2014 Super Five Series’ in the U11 and U15 categories respectively.

Organised by Lagan Valley Athletics Club and taking place at the Mary Peters track, the firmus energy Super Five is the largest youth athletics series in Northern Ireland.

It is designed to encourage beginners to come out and ‘have a go’ at track and field events as well as helping to develop serious global competitors and future local Olympians.

Not missing even one of the events of the series, prolific young athlete, Ella Armstrong, was recognised in the U11 category for her performance in a number of the track and field events, winning the Long Jump, Javelin, 150 metres and the 60m hurdles.

She also significantly improved in the Shot Putt coming from 13th with a throw of 3.32m in the first meet to getting the top spot on the podium at the fourth event by doubling the distance with a throw of 6.65m.

Attending four out of the five events, Bradley Mulholland shone as a great all-rounder and true ‘multi-eventer’.

He achieved a top three spot in most of the events he participated in across the series including the Javelin, the 200m, the 80m hurdles and the Long Jump.

Bryan McCorkell from organisers Lagan Valley Athletics Club, commented: “Congratulations to Ella and Bradley – being selected for this accolade was no mean feat.

“It is great to see the popularity of athletics go from strength to strength – we are so impressed with the enthusiasm and level of talent shown during the series – in fact, it was difficult to choose just one overall winner from each age category.”

Des Brown from firmus energy added: “At firmus energy we are delighted to be able to do what we can to help power local talent and Lisburn athletes Ella and Bradley epitomise that – congrats to them both.”
