Tullylish on top thanks to Chris

TWO goals from Tullylish corner forward Chris McGovern either side of half-time proved to be the crucial scores in this Division II game in Laurencetown on Monday night.

Although Tullylish opened the scoring with a John McAreavey free, it was the visitors who had the better of the early exchanges and in the third minute Paul Grant took advantage of a mix up in the Tullylish defence to score the game’s opening goal. Playing with the advantage of a diagonal breeze Glasdrumman continued to press forward but poor finishing prevented them from building on their early lead.

The locals scored five unanswered points through three McAreavey frees and points from Peter Quinn and Chris McGovern to lead 0-6 to 1-0 after 20 minutes.

Glasdrumman responded with a pointed free from Connaire Harrison and then reduced the deficit to the minimum a few minutes later with a well taken point from Martin McGrath. Gareth Johnston fielded well from the resultant the kick-out before delivering a pinpoint pass to Shannon Drainey who intelligently drew his man before off loading to McGovern who blasted to the net with five minutes of the half remaining. Glasdrumman replied with an injury time free from Cormac Murphy to leave the half-time score Tullylish 1-6 Glasdrumman 1-3.

The second half was only a minute old when McGovern netted for the second time following a build up that involved strong running from Johnston and Fiontann O’Dowd. A Paul Grant point kept Glasdrumman in touch but similar scores from Quinn, McGovern and McAreavey gave Tullylish an eight-point lead at the end of the third quarter.

Glasdrumman kept chipping away at Tullylish’s lead, and points from Murphy, Colm Carr and the hard working Harrison reduced the margin to 5 points with four minutes remaining. However, superb defending from Barry Priestley, Conor McManus and Joe McDermott denied the visitors’ the goal chance they needed in the closing minutes. In the end it was Tullylish who finished the strongest and a McAreavey free concluding the scoring.
