Top spot for Quigley

This week Larne Athletic Club members travelled the length of the Province in search for personal bests.

The action kicked off at the ECOS Parkrun, Ballymena where Geraldine Quigley and Robin Alexander put their speed work to the test. Geraldine finished as first female for the third week in a row, completing the 5km time-trial in 20:42. Robin continued his impressive progress, crossing the line in 28:02 (46th place).

In North Down, seven Larne athletes took on the ‘Aurora’ Bangor 10k road race - one of the country’s most popular events. This year it attracted well over 800 runners and Nat Glenn led the Larne team home in 35:38 (14th place) which was enough to secure second in the Vet45 category. A disappointed James Brown recorded 36:29 (20th place).

Greg Lavery clocked 38:13 (35th place), just ahead of club-mate Brian Heron (37th place – 38:22). Another member who continues to impress is Evan Taylor. Having returned to running recently, he crossed the line in 42:07 (90th place).

Heather Baxter clocked 50:53 (326th place), while Gillian Logan (580th place) battled through the blustery conditions to finish in 57:40.

Meanwhile, on the north coast four Larne AC members took part in the 26extreme organised Causeway Coast events. Top performer and popular club member Phelim McAllister led the half-marathon for 10 miles before tiring, but battled well to finish in third place in 1:37:11. Deon Wallace completed the 13.1-mile scenic course in 2:01:03 (59th place), with Ian Brennan just behind in 2:01:33 (63rd place).

Performance of the weekend must go to Amy Beggs, competing in her third Ultra race (considered as any distance over 26.2 miles). Amy ran strongly, especially during the early part of the race when the elements were against her. She completed the 39-mile race in 9:51:58 (68th place).

Larne Athletic Club welcomes new members and anyone wishing to join the club or try a training is encouraged to visit the club’s website at www.larneac.co.uk for training times.
