Thistle revel in day out in Newry

IVEAGH Thistle entertained Dromore Juniors at Newry City in the George Best U12 League knowing that if they won their last four matches in the league the title would be theirs.

The first half was an even affair in terms of possession but Thistle were looking more dangerous when they attacked.

The closest they came to a goal was a rasping shot by the Thistle midfielder Gallagher which came back off the bar and was cleared to safety.

The second half started with Iveagh Thistle pushing Dromore back, defending deep and 10 minutes in a shot hit a raised defenders hand and the referee pointed to the spot.  Carroll stepped forward and made no mistake finding the corner of the net sending the locals one up.

Dromore responded well to this set back and had a good five minute spell in the oppositions half which resulted in a free kick being awarded wide on the right.  The ball was lofted into the box and the Dromore striker was first to react swiftly getting his shot away, keeper Hunter managed to get a hand to it but could not stop the ball crossing the line to level the match.

The next 10 minutes were a tight affair with Thistle having to push for the win but very wary of the Dromore threat.  Lots of goalmouth action followed at both ends but neither keeper was really tested.

With the clock ticking down the second goal arrived for Thistle when the keeper parried a shot and quick reacting Donnelly was first to follow up to score to much celebration.  Two one was to be the final score in a hard fought match with both teams enjoying the experience of playing on an Irish League pitch in front of a good crowd cheering them on from the stands.
