Third World Cycle for Dromara

ON Sunday April 25 the annual Downpatrick Third World Charity Cycle set off from event headquarters in the Cricket Club.

The charity hoped to raise runs for its projects in various Third World countries including supporting orphanages, setting up schools etc.

Two routes were on offer, the main tour (approximately 60 miles) and the family cycle (10 miles). The day started off dry with some early morning sunshine and this helped to attract a large field of approximately 100 riders who soon filled up the parking area.

By far the biggest club in attendance was Dromara Cycling Club with approximately 40 members lined up ready for the off.

Two police motorbikes were in attendance with another set of motorcycle outriders, lead car and backup vehicle.

The family tour set off first leaving just after 10am and headed along the cycle path towards Crossgar, five miles away, where refreshments were waiting at the Villager restaurant. The main bunch started shortly after and they headed for Clough then onto the big climb up to Castlewellan before heading to Bryansford, Newcastle, Dundrum then back to Clough for refreshments.

After refueling, the riders then headed onto Tyrella, Killough, Ardglass then round a hilly route to Strangford and then more hills back to Downpatrick. The day had been overcast but the heavens did open when the riders got to Ardglass which persuaded a few riders to cut back to base early.

Back at the Cricket Club, the hardworking organisers had prepared lots of tasty sandwiches as well as tea and coffee with plenty of well-received tray bakes and other treats.

Many thanks to Marie Boyle and her team of helpers who had organised a great days cycling and had raised over 1,300 for the charity.

The next Dromara Cycling Club leisure event will be the Dromara Coastal Tour on Sunday May 9.

Once again there will be a choice of two distances, 50 and 75 miles. The start will be at Dromara Football Club, Rathfriland Road, Dromara at 9.30am with sign on open from 8.45am.

In 2009 in excess of 200 keen cyclists took part, so we again hope for good weather.
