Tennis season set to begin

THE opening of the 2012 senior tennis season will take place on Thursday 29 March at 6.45pm in the Tennis Club and new members are encouraged to come along and join us.

The evening will take the form of a fun tournament followed by a fish and chip supper and presentation of prizes.

The senior club has entered two teams in the Belfast & District Mixed League which starts at the end of April and we encourage all existing and new members to support our team captains as they prepare for the new Season.

The Men’s Singles League started last week with Banbridge losing 4-1 to a very strong CIYMS team. Michael Sands from the Banbridge side saved the team from a wipe-out score with an excellent win after a three set match.

The rest of the team - Matthew Gray, Matthew McClune, Derek Harrison and Steven Smyth - lost their matches quite decisively with CIYMS already looking as early contenders for the Division 2 Title. Hopefully the Banbridge team will fare better in their next match which is at home to Windsor.

Meanwhile the ladies team playing in the Winter League completed their fixtures with a 2-0 defeat by Lurgan. The team which included Jane Boyce, Daphne Gray, Gladys Montgomery and Barbara McCrea, playing in her first League match for the Club, travelled to their near neighbours in Lurgan who proved too strong for the Banbridge side.

Following the opening tournament, club play will be available for members on Monday and Thursday nights at the Tennis Club.
