SWIFT SUCCESS WOULD BE SWEET

The Town take on Dungannon Swifts in the senior trophy’s decider (kick-off 7.45pm) with the aim of winning the cup for the first time since 1980 and go into the game against the Premiership side as rank outsiders.

The Town last made an appearance in the final of the Mid Ulster Cup at the end of the 2007-08 season when they lost to a Loughgall side which included current Town boss Brian Adair 2-1 at Armagh City’s Holm Park.

The last time they won the cup was in 1980-81, when Newry Town, managed by Peter Watson, were beaten by the locals.

“Winning the cup would be a massive shock but it would be the perfect way to round off the season,” said Town Chairman Andrew Cully.

“It will be a big ask but you never know what might happen in a cup final,” he said.

“It would be a remarkable achievement to lift the trophy. Brian and the boys deserve it. They’ve worked so hard this season that a piece of silverwear - especially in the form of a senior competition like the Mid Ulster Cup - would be perfect.”

It will also be a special day for young Jake Kavanagh. The five-year-old will be the club’s mascot for the day.

And the Town Juniors’ Under-14 team, winners of the Mid Ulster League Shield at the weekend (report inside) will team up with their Dungannon United Youth counterparts to lead the teams out on the night before playing each other during the half time interval.

Town will be without the cup-tied Kevin Henry, who also misses the last home game of the season which takes place tonight (Tuesday, 7.15pm kick-off) against Annagh United.

He is suspended following his sending off against Killymoon Rangers on Saturday.

The season finally comes to an end next Saturday (May 4) when Town will travel to Castledawson to play Moyola Park (kick-off 1pm). Wouldn’t it be great to travel to Moyola with The Mid-Ulster Cup on board!
