Strong start proves to be a good base for firsts

BANBRIDGE Netball Club’s firsts intended to use this match as a rehearsal for their shield semi final match next week and their intent was to start strongly and establish an early lead.

However they took some time to settle into their normal rhythm of play and some scrappy periods meant that Valley led by three goals at quarter time, 11-8.

Christine Cartmill at goalkeeper was stepping up from the Seconds and used her height and skills very effectively in the circle.

During the interval Banbridge rearranged the team moving Emma Boyd from WA into her usual position of centre, Lynne into wing attack and Joanne Kerr into wing defence.

This seemed to settle the team down and everyone stepped up a gear. Paula McBride and Sarah Porter demonstrated superb movement in the shooting circle creating shooting opportunities which they easily converted.

Banbridge’s defence worked hard when Valley had possession creating turnover opportunities with Joanne Kerr at WD and Cathy Buchanan at goal defence regularly sending the ball back up to our shooting circle. At half time Banbridge had pulled ahead 22-18.

At half time Emma Cartmill came on at goal defence. This was Emma’s first match at senior level in Banbridge netball club, having previously played this year for the U16s.

Emma is recently home from playing for the Northern Ireland U17 team in Malta and the whole club would like to congratulate her on this wonderful achievement.

Cathy Buchanan moved from GD into GK. Emma and Cathy marked very closely in the Valley shooting circle creating turnover ball for Banbridge.

A number of missed shots from both teams meant that this was an exciting quarter to watch with the ball moving from end to end very quickly. The three quarter time score was 33-28 to Banbridge.

In the fourth and final quarter the whole team worked very efficiently together using every mistake made by Valley to score. The final result was 42-36 to Banbridge. This was a great win which keeps the team in second place in division A2.
