Springwell's Sally selected for Aviva Great Britain and NI team

SPRINGWELL'S Sally Brown has been selected for the UKA IWAS World Junior team over the 100m and 200m.

Sally is a member of the 18-strong Aviva Great Britain and Northern Ireland team which will travel for the annual event in Olomouc, Czech Republic, from 20-26 August 2010

UKA's Paralympics Performance Manager Paula Dunn, Team Leader, said: "Following a series of high quality domestic events with this year's UKA Disability Athletics Challenge series and a number of Aviva Parallel Success events, our under-23 athletes have now got the chance to compete against the world's best in their age group at the IWAS Juniors. "With the IPC World Championships only five months away, the event also presents the last major competition opportunity for many of these athletes to secure qualifying standards. "Selection for this event was very competitive this year with 22 qualifiers going for limited slots, so congratulations to all of those who have made the team."

A record 225 runners competed in this year's Lurig Run, which took place on Saturday as part of the Heart of the Glens Festival 2010.

Joe McAlister won in a very impressive time of 28:50 with Shileen O'Kane the first female home in 35:21.

Springwell had three runners competing. David Jackson 34:40 (1st MO40), Gerry O'Doherty 37:05 (1st MO55) and Gillian Wasson 40:13 (1st FO35)

Five Springwell athletes travelled to Ballyclare on Saturday for the Scott & Gault 10 Mile Road Race.

The major prize winners were Alan McCullough (54:42) and Lisa Tracy (67:05).

First home for Springwell was Bryan Edgar 62:59 followed by Hugh Boyle 66:10 (1st MO55) Linda Gillen 78:14, Joe McEvoy 90:02 and Kenny Bacon 91:17.

Over 200 athletes descended on Loughry College, Cookstown on Friday 6 August for the 5th running of Sperrin Harrier's Classic 5 Mile Road Race. The undulating course takes place on the roads around the College, these are challenging for the best of runners but despite this produced good times.

The first male athlete to cross the finish line was; Joe McAlister in 24:40 and followed by Stephen Duncan in 24.46 and Jarlath Falls third in 24:57. The first female home was Cathy McCourt in 29:17 followed by Anne Paul in 30:28 and Julie Butler in 31:22. Omagh Harriers, won the Male Team Race with Springwell RC winning the Female Team.

Springwell were well represented with 23 runners in the field and came home with some age category prizes.

Well done to Sperrin Harriers on an excellent race and the welcome cup of tea at the end which set the runners up for the journey home.
