Slane Thirds oh so close to Cup upset

Slane Thirds pushed Division Two League leaders Kirkistown all the way in the first round of the Harry Clarke Cup but were beaten 2-1.

Kirkistown opened the scoring with a free-kick that the striker blasted straight into the net. Slane did not drop their heads and they ploughed on and created chances of their own but could not convert.

Slane surged forward from the restart and Paul English delivered a free-kick right onto Gareth Hamilton’s head. He made no mistake, heading home.

With half an hour left, Kirkistown got the break through. A long throw was flicked on into the top corner.

Slane pushed hard for the equaliser but Gary Hanna headed wide and Sammy Watts forced a great save.

Slane’s man of the match was Adam Gibson.
