Silver medal for Aaron

BANBRIDGE lad Aaron McDowell brought has brought home a silver medal from the Shooting World Championships in South Africa.

Competing in the B class of the competition, Aaron now has his sights set on winning a place in the Northern Ireland squad for the Home Internationals later this year.

The 19 year old said, “I was competing against a very high standard, there were guys there from New Zealand, Germany, New Zealand, Sweden and the rest of the UK. There were four juniors out there from Northern Ireland.

“I thought I shot the best I had all year. I shot 100 lines on the first day, 100 on the second and then 50 on the third. The top 10% of those shooters then shot another 50 lines so I managed to finish second.”

The championships were near Cape Town in Paarl and Aaron travelled out there with his dad. The event is held every two years and switches between the Northern and Southern Hemisphere.

“It was a great experience, it was definitely something I would like to experience again,” he added.
