Seconds round off season by beating Grosvenor Thirds

BANBRIDGE Ladies Seconds XI played their last league game for this season on Friday night at Havelock against Grosvenor Third XI.

The local girls had already secured second place in the league and promotion to Junior League 3 therefore were able to enjoy this game without added pressure.

Banbridge dominated the game, working well as a unit and kept the pressure on Grosvenor from the first whistle.

With Bann constantly on the attack it wasn’t long before the home side won a penalty corner which Diane Madeley fired into the back of the goal to take Bann ahead.

The forward line all had opportunities in the circle and the Bann midfield kept Grosvenor on their toes as they worked the ball through and created space.

It wasn’t long before Bann extended their lead when Helen Sawyers made a great cross from the right which Sarah Anderson connected with to beat the Grosvenor ‘keeper.

Banbridge continued to move the ball well around the pitch with Kate Cunningham putting through some great balls to the forward line. Grosvenor had few opportunities to attack the Bann defence and any moves by their forwards were broken down by the Bann back four.

Despite more chances in the circle the local girls were unable to find the target to extend the lead further before the half time whistle.

The second half was much the same as the first with Banbridge continuing to dictate the pace of play and controlling the game. Again Grosvenor struggled to find form and any opportunities they had were quickly closed down by Bann’s defence with Bann ‘keeper Claire McMullan not having to touch the ball during the game.

Her counterpart however, in the Grosvenor net was kept busy, making countless saves to keep her team in the game with one great save in particular denying Rosie Waddell from getting her name on the score sheet.

Banbridge were awarded numerous penalty corners as they pinned the Grosvenor girls into their circle and it was from one of these which Bann scored again.

Diane Madeley switched the ball to Ashleigh Mitchell who fired it towards the goal for Sarah Anderson to slot in the rebound. Towards the final whistle Player of the Match Sarah Anderson almost got her hatrick but just put the ball wide.

This was a good finish for Banbridge Ladies Seconds who have had a successful 2011/12 season.

The team would like to thank coach Robin Madeley for all his hard work over the season with the Second XI and thanks to Amanda Morton for umpiring this game.
