Scotland trip for High School rugby team

VERY early in the morning of Friday Februar 22,, 30 Year 8 and 9 pupils met at school to head to Scotland for the weekend to play two fixtures, as well as attend the Glasgow Warriors v Ulster match, and the Scotland v Ireland match at Murrayfield.

The boys had been looking forward to the tour for some time and had been fundraising through a table quiz and a ‘guess the score competition’. Much of the funding towards the tour kit had come from very generous sponsorship from Bridgestone, Thompson Tyres, Drumhill Farm Fresh, JA Smyth Developments and Blanch-Pak.

On Friday the team played Lomond School from Helensburgh. The game was played over three 25 minute thirds. After two thirds the Dromore Boys were 14–3 up with two super tries from Samuel McMurry, but in the last third the early morning wake-up started to show and the boys went on to lose the game 24–14.

The boys were soon back to life however, as they travelled to Scotstoun, home of the Glasgow Warriors to cheer on Ulster. Unfortunately the Ulster team failed to perform to the levels the merry band of schoolboy supporters desired, and they fell to a 20–14 defeat.

On Saturday the boys took a sightseeing tour around Stirling Castle en route to the prestigious Merchiston Castle School in Edinburgh. In the match boys showed their Scottish counterparts what Dromore High School rugby is all about and were aggressive right from the start, recording an excellent 26–7 victory, with David Lyttle and Peter O’Connor impressing.

That evening the boys went bowling with Lyttle capping off a good day all round to win the boys competition, while it was Mr Bronte who claimed the staff bragging rights.

Sunday saw the boys head home but not before they attended the Scotland v Ireland Six Nations game at Murrayfield. With a young backline filled with Ulster stars the boys were hoping for a victory for the Irish side, a bit like the previous day. Unfortunately Ireland failed to take their chances, unlike the ruthless Dromore boys, and they crashed to a 12–8 defeat.

A great tour was had by all the boys and staff. The boys did Dromore High School proud the whole weekend. On the late boat journey on the way home, tour awards were given out, with Peter O’Connor receiving the player of the tour awards for two outstanding performances, and James Howard received the ‘Best Tourist’ award for his constant smile and banter the whole weekend.
