Ryan and Lloyd shine for the Seconds in first win of season

Banbridge Seconds 45

Portadown Seconds 20

Banbridge Seconds won their first game of the season on Thursday, comfortably overcoming Portadown 45-20.

From the outset Banbridge were strong and dominated the first quarter taking an early goal advantage with the quarter-time score Bann 8 – 3 Portadown.

Kerrie Patterson replaced Leanne Burns in WD starting the second quarter. With a confident start to the game, Banbridge maintained their strong attacking play and further extended their goal lead throughout the second quarter.

The strong defence partnership of GK Elaine Henry and GD Rachel Ryan in the circle ensured that the unforced errors made by Portadown were acted on and the ball was delivered down into Bann shooting circle where it was converted by effortless shooting by GS Melanie Lloyd & GA Lisa Docherty. Bann went into half-time with a healthy 24 – 9 lead.

Bann made no changes going into the third quarter. Again their defence worked tirelessly to make the most of every opportunity that Portadown missed. The attacking duo of WA Lisa Trainor and C Claire McCullough fed the shooting circle effortlessly allowing Banbridge to maintain a strong goal difference at the end of the third quarter: Bann 35 – 16 Portadown.

Banbridge were comfortable entering the last quarter and made a few changes. Ingrid Orr replaced Elaine Henry in GK and Sophie Byrne replaced Lisa Docherty in GA. Bann soon found their momentum and continued to extend their lead and secure the comortable win. Rachel Ryan and Melanie Lloyd were inseparable as the players of the match.

The win was a great tonic for their Betty Richmond Shield defeat to Valley Seconds. Their opponents for this one were a league above Bann and it showed early on as Valley raced into an 11-2 lead after the first quarter.

Bann fought to the end but couldn’t pull back the goal difference despite a player of the match performance from Claire McCullough.
