RORY Leonard was Banbridge’s sole representative in the West of Ireland Amateur Golf Championship played over the Easter holiday period.
Rory won this championship in 2010 and he has always featured prominently in the event.
This year the weather was arctic and, over the exposed links of Rosses Point, there was no hiding place.
Rory battled to a very respectable 80 in the first qualifying round and then improved by ten shots in qualifying round number two. His total score of 150 was the eighth best qualifying score. This was a tremendous effort.
In the opening round of matchplay, Rory beat Mark Morrisey (Mount Wolesley) by
2 and 1.
In Round two Rory beat Robbie Cannon (Balbriggan) 2 and 1.
Rory had a magnificent match in round against the eventual winner, Rory McNamara (Headford). Our Rory lost by the narrowest of margins, one hole.
Rory McNamara beat Niall Gorey (Muskery) in the final by 5 and 4.
It was a promising start to the season for Rory Leonard. We will be watching his progress as the year unfolds.
