Robinson Pops the ball into the net but Bann Thirds lose out

Bann Thirds took on bottom of the league Annadale Seconds at Havelock on Saturday and suffered a surprise 3-1 defeat.

Thankfully safe from relegation, Bann knew that Annadale Twos, would be out to prove a point.

Still Bann were taken by surprise at the level of skill displayed by Annadale in the first 10 minutes, putting three superb passing moves together and clinically finishing the strikes past keeper Louise Beckett.

However, the Bann heads didn’t go down and following a few tactical changes, the Bann girls started to fight their way back into the game.

Midfielders Lynda McKinley and Elli Robinson fought hard to regain ground, putting together a string of passes to find the forward line.  Pressure by the forwards on Annadale’s backs culminated in several circle penetrations and a few goal line scrambles.

Winning a short corner, replacement sweeper Jess almost started a come back but her powerful shot was spectacularly cleared off the line mid air.

In the final seconds of the first half, midfielder Hanna Thompson created room on the right for a pass into the circle, centre Punam McGookin took a first time shot which looped up over the keeper only to be disallowed as the whistle went for half time.

The fight to get back into the game started afresh in the second half.  The Bann forwards Jessica Faulkner, Jayne Walker and Ash Mitchell made some impressive passes but Annadale stayed strong in defence.

Both teams had attacking chances, Bann winning another couple of corners but the ball just wouldn’t go into the back of the net.

That was until during another scramble in the circle. the ball fell to Punam who threaded it through the keeper and a defender to Poppy Robinson who dived to put the ball in the back of the net.

Despite a valiant attempt, the Bann girls just couldn’t compete with the strength of this Annadale team.
