Riders set for return to Carnlough

AS part of the annual Dalriada Festival at Glenarm there will be a Mounted Beach Chase on Carnlough beach on Sunday 15th July 2012.

This event was held for the first time last summer and proved to be of huge entertainment value to both spectators and competitors alike.

Apart from a few difficulties with the tide, which was not obeying the directions of King Canute (alias Tommy Caves), the event was voted a great success and was extensively covered by the press and TV. It also had a mention in Horse & Hound magazine.

The setting of Carnlough Beach, County Antrim provides a natural grandstand for the spectators who can watch from the footpath above and not miss a thrill or spill.

This chase involves a mounted relay with two teams of four riders each, jumping against each other, passing the “baton” in the form of a hunting crop, from rider to rider, with the first team to get their last rider home being the winner. Last year the competition was fierce with several riders glad they’d brought a change of clothes and there were some spectacular turns in the water throwing up the spray, providing some great photographic opportunities.

The fences are sponsored by Wilsons Auctions and built by the extremely experienced course builder Noel Fitzpatrick. The fences are relatively small and are designed to be inviting enough for ponies while still providing a challenge for horses.

As part of the course the horses have to turn around a post in the deeper water, a hard enough feat on dry land, let alone in the waves. The competition is open to anyone over 11 provided they are competent riders, and have parental/guardian consent.

The prize money is extremely generous with £400 going to the first prize winner, £200 to the second and £100 going to the best turned out team.

The number of teams competing is on a first come first served basis and has to be strictly limited because of tide constraints.

The organisers of this event are extremely grateful to the Dalriada Festival for including this event in their programme and it is a unique event. For information phone Patsy on 07748951218 or Tommy on 07990582081.
