Plenty of sibling rivalry at round seven of junior championship

THE North Armagh Junior Quad Club's championship seventh round got underway with the sun shining bright on the 90 young riders that turned up for championship points and a good day's racing.

The 50cc class were first off the line and with 13 young riders from the age of six all battling it out for the first corner. It was Curtis Sizer who took control from start to finish, but not letting him have it all his own way was Tom Richey close behind just ahead of newcomer this year Oby Dillon.

In the LTA 50 class with the gates dropping it was brother and sister, Jason and Megan Ferguson, both striving for the holeshot at the first corner. Jason just had the edge and took both the lead and then the chequered flag with Megan finishing a close second, Lee Curran in third and Joshua Brannigan fourth.

The water cooled class saw Stephen Campbell-Porter leading the way ahead of Ciaran McMullan and Ronan Mooney, while in the air cooled class it was Bailie Kirkwood who was took podium points ahead of sister and brother Clodagh and Cathal McCracken who also battled each other throughout the day.

The 110 class proved exciting with the girls giving the boys a good chase for pole position . Blake McCormick held on to the lead all the way to the finish line but with a few mechanical breakdowns it was a disappointing day for Stephen Mulholland and Darren Owens.

Girl power took over and both Claire McCracken and Hannah Magowan showed what they were made of and finished second and third respectively.

The 80cc class was really exciting racing with two of the top riders, twins Jack and William McCoy, both having a bad run with mechanical failures for one and a fall off. However they both got sorted and finished the race.

In another heat it was once again another brother, Alex and Daniel Harper who led the race. The most exciting race of the 80s was the A final with Jack McCoy and Gary Dillon having a real good clean battle. With both lads leading the Club Championship it was Jack who took the chequered flag just half a tyre ahead of Gary - so close it was almost a photo finish! Third place was well deserved by Jordan Dillon.

It turned into a good day after all for McCoy twins as William then won the B final with Dion McVey in second and Jamie Stirling in third.

Again the 200cc Blasters was excellent racing, Claire Woodburn took the holeshot in one of the heats and left fellow competitor and current championship leader, James Tougher a tough battle ahead of him. Claire didn’t make it easy for him or the rest of the pack.

But it was the A Final once again that provided a real battle for first and second between Stephen Haugh and James Tougher. In the end it was Stephen who got in front of James and Ben McElveen who took third.

The 250 class also had the parents pacing the track and again it was one of the girls who was taking control of all the races. Katharine Tougher took the holeshots in all her races and held that lead for a few laps before any other riders managed to pass her.

Once again she didn’t give in easy they had to work hard to achieve their places on podium and it was Andrew Davis who got first, Gary Lowe second and Gareth Graham in third. Well done to all who took part in the race and came in safe.
