Plenty of goals and plenty of action in U8s games

RATHFRILAND FC U8s were out again last Saturday with two teams at the IFA Development Programme at St Colemans, Newry.

First up for the U8’s was a very talented Windmill team, who were just too strong for Rathfriland on the day.

Rathfriland quickly put this game behind them and produced a great team performance against a strong Damolly team, with Rathfriland coming away with a well deserved 7-6 win. Adam Trimble continues to prove that he has an eye for goal by grabbing a superb hat trick to help Rathfriland take control of the game early on. Damolly then fought back with some good goals of their own.

But Jack Maginn and Connor McElroy then scored two goals each to cap two great performances as they continue to show great potential in their first season with the club. There was also a great performance from Ross Chambers both in goal and at the heart of Rathfriland’s defence to ensure Rathfriland came out on top. James Walsh also had another solid performance in midfield putting in tackle after tackle as the boy’s held on until the final whistle to ensure Rathfriland came away with the victory.

The other Rathfriland team had three games the first against Ashgrove, the game finishing 3 – 1 to the Newry team who appeared to take fear of Rathfriland`s comeback signalling an early finish to the game with Aaron Baxter getting a well taken goal for Rathfriland.

In their second game Rathfriland drew 3–3 with a strong windmill stars team with a great performance. Shane Haughey gave Rathfriland the lead but Windmill replied with two strikes before Harry Annett equalised to make it 2–2.

Haughey then put Rathfriland 3–2 ahead with another great goal but just on the whistle Windmill equalised. In this game Aaron Baxter had a great game in goals pulling off two super saves while Christopher McConville was superb in defence clearing his lines on a number of occasions.

In their third game Rathfriland saved their best to last defeating Newry City 7–0 with a great team performance.

The game was really tight for the first half but Rathfriland took the lead on the stroke of half time when Harry Annett wriggled through with a low left foot shot from a tight angle to make it 1–0. On the restart Rathfriland got better and better and Rueben Toal made it 2–0 with a fine strike from distance. Shane Haughey then put Rathfriland 3–0 up with a fine rising shot with Harry Annett making it 4–0 soon after.

Haughey then made it 5 – 0 and then put Annett through with a great ball for him to make it 6–0.

Annett then nipped it to score the final goal of the game from close range to leave the final score at 7 – 0.

Aaron Baxter again was tireless in his tackling and hard work while Christopher McConville again tidied up at the back with a very neat performance.

Overall another great day out for Rathfriland Under 8`s with both teams putting in excellent performances and another great effort from all the boys.
