Plenty of goals

RATHFRILAND U10s braved a cold damp morning at the Abbey Grammar in Newry for what turned out to be a thrilling encounter full of high quality end to end football.

Rathfriland looked sharp from the off and almost took the lead with a neat passing move between Tairnan Maginn and Thomas Ingram ended with Caolán Teer being denied the opener when the Camlough keeper pushed his goal bound effort over the bar.

Camlough then woke up and took the lead when long range shot gave Darren Sloane in goal no chance. They scored again before the break with a well worked move on the left finished by their striker.

Camlough found it difficult to cope with the Rathfriland movement in the second half and this allowed Ingram to pull one back and Bronte to score the equaliser with a rasping right footed drive. Minutes later the Rovers scored again to retake the lead only to concede a penalty for a handball in the box which Teer coolly blasted into the right hand corner to go back on level terms.

The move of the game came when, from the heart of their own defence, Bronte released a flying Burns on the right who in turn played a one-two with McKee and crossed for the lunging Teer to miss by inches. Rathfriland did take the lead when a ball broke to Ingram on the edge of the box and he hammered home into the bottom right hand corner.

In the final period Maginn was denied twice by the magnificent Camlough keeper who had kept them in the game with some great saves and allowed them to snatch the equaliser with three minutes to go.

Rathfriland could have won it with the last kick of the game but Bronte could not finish off Maginn’s excellent cross. This was a great performance from all with Darcy Burns outstanding on the day.
