Philip's fantastic season just keeps on getting better

Philip Mallon seems to be getting a win every other week at Banbridge Golf Club.

Philip’s fourball are always first out, hitting off at 6.30 am. They have a clear run, nobody in front of them and the second fourball about an hour behind them. This early start wouldn’t suit everyone but Philip. Dennis, John and Colin seem to revel in it.

Philip, who was cut from nine to eight after his big win, got off to the perfect start with nine straight pars.

He played the second nine in one over. That gave him a gross 70 and a winning score of 44 points.

Our man Tommy Fee ran the Dromara 5k recently and it did him no harm on the course - he bagged 40 points on Saturday. INBL1624-233EB

Richard Coburn (11) was runner-up with 42 points. His was a different story. He was seven over par after six holes and then played the remaining 12 holes in 10 pars and 2 birdies. That was an amazing turn around.

Shane Rooney (9 now 8) made a welcome return to winning ways by taking first place in the low section. Shane had 42 points, highlighted by twos at the 8th and the 15th holes.

Jim Gracey (11 now 10) was second in the low section with 41 points.

Michael Gillen (17) won the middle section with 40 points. He was eight over after five and didn’t look like a contender. Michael settled down to play the remaining 13 holes in five over and secured the prize.

Tom Fee (16 now 15) was second in the middle section with 40 points. The highlights of his round were the three birdies. The lowlights were the three dings.

Jim Bryson (19) won the high section with 40 points. Close behind him second came Kieran McGreevey (22) with 39.

Luke Woods (4) won the best gross with a level par 69.

Finally, John J Lennon (10) won best senior with 41 points. Don’t the seniors seem to get younger every week?

Brian Boyd, Alan Caughey, Matthew Mallon, Joe Whiteside and Declan Dooher all came very close with 40 points each.

The calculated standard scratch score was nett 67 or 38 points.

Cameron Morton, Barry Tumelty, Dennis Watt, Shane Bell, Gareth Martin, John Convery, Kieran Magennis and Gary McCormick all managed to break that with 39 points.

But the man of the moment is Philip Mallon, whose season just seems to get better by the day.
