Pedalling to success

Causeway Cycling Club is now enjoying its second year of cycling around the north coast and beyond and raising funds for local good causes.

Saturday evening witnessed the Annual Club Dinner where club members and their guests gathered to celebrate another successful year.

This year the club committee decided to recognise the achievements and contributions of their members.

Whilst the club caters for those cyclists happy to do ten or twenty miles at a gentle pace right up to those who wish to compete in the toughest sportive, this year they held their first club cycle race.

This was a traditional Hill Climb event held on the challenging local Cranagh Road course. This was an exciting night of hard fought racing. The Male Hill Climb Champion Cup for 2014 was awarded to Ryan Jamison, with Davy Stewart awarded a trophy for second place and Nigel Kerr and Michael Bacon awarded trophies for their joint 3rd place.

The Female Hill Climb Champion Cup was awarded to Rachel Galbraith, with Ally Kelly and Fiona Walls awarded trophies for second and third place respectively.

The club also presented awards to Norman Kane and Fiona Walls for Most Improved Male and Female respectively, recognising the huge gains they had achieved throughout the year. Norman actually lost 10 stone in weight!

The club committee noted that so many members had given so much to the club this year that it was difficult to single out any one individual although one member in particular had stood out. The award for Club Member of the Year was presented to Simon Moore.

Club Chairman, Robert Downes, said: “Simon had given up his time and advice freely to new and existing members, supporting the development of the club at every opportunity.”

The club is for people who want to ride their bikes in a friendly group, enjoying our tremendous local scenery but without the intensity of a racing/training environment. Causeway is an inclusive club, welcoming men and women from 9 to 90. The weekend club runs on Saturday and Sunday mornings, leaving Costa Coffee in Coleraine at 0900, are designed to develop the camaraderie of the group. Contact [email protected] for more information.
