Olivia cleans up on the golf course

FIFTEEN-year-old Olivia Mehaffey has just completed three weeks of major golf tournaments.

In this period, the Banbridge High School pupil has won the Munster Ladies, the Munster Girls and the Ireland Faldo Series. Olivia, who plays golf in Tandragee and Royal County Down, also finished thrird in the Scottish Girls U-16’s.

But her biggest win came at the weekend when Olivia shot a level par final round 71 to win the Irish Girls Open Stroke Play Championship at Roganstown Golf & Country Club.

Olivia was four under through nine holes with birdies on the third, sixth, seventh and ninth holes but suffered a treble bogey 8 on the 10th. Olivia regained her momentum and was level par for the remaining holes finishing with a birdie four on the home green.

During the school Easter holidays, Olivia travelled to in Dooks, Co. Kerry and won both the Munster Girls and Muster Ladies competitions.

The Girls competition was for players U-18 and Olivia’s scores were good enough for her to win both championships.

Olivia was only home for two days and on Easter Monday travelled with the Irish Girls U16’s to play in the Scottish U16 tournament at Strathmore in Perth.

On the first day Olivia shot a 73 gross to be one shot behind the leader.

On the second day Olivia was out early and shot a gross 69, 3 under par.

Olivia was the leader until the last two groups of players returned their scores but Alice Hewson shot four birdies in the last six holes to beat Olivia by two shots.

On 16th April 2013, Olivia played in the Faldo Series at Lough Erne Resort.

This series is for boys and girls up to the age of 21.

Olivia shot level par for two rounds and finished the overall winner of this tournament, beating 134 competitors.

As a result, Olivia will go to the Grand Final and will play against the European winners.

Sir Nick Faldo will be present at this competition to give advice to all of the competiors.

This is Olivia’s second visit to the Grand Final and she says she can’t wait to play in another Final as it was a great experience last time and she learned a lot from Sir Nick Faldo.

Olivia hopes to keep this round of good form up and is hoping to make the GB & Ireland U-16 Girls team to play against Europe in the Vagliano Trophy.
