North to Georgia for new appeal

Hot on the heels of last week’s appeal from a Florida man, another American is hoping Dromore residents can help her track down any remaining relatives in the area.

Beth Golden, who hails from Florida’s immediate northern neighbour, Georgia - specifically, the state capital, Atlanta - is looking for relatives among the Little, Martin, Jamison and Adair family circles.

She has so far established Dromore roots dating back to the first half of the 19th century.

Herself retired, Beth has been delving into her local family history for some time now and has high hopes of finding relatives in the area with whom to correspond and share family history,

“I live in Atlanta, Georgia and have been researching my County Down ancestors for many years,” she said.

“My second great-grandparents were David Little and Elizabeth Martin Little.

“David was born on 31 May 1834 and Elizabeth in 1830.”

Beth conceded the information she had on her great-grandfather was minimal.

“I know very little about David,” she said, “except that his father was Andrew and they were both blacksmiths living in Dromore in 1856.

“Elizabeth’s mother was Elizabeth (Betsy) Jamison and her father was Joseph Martin.

“Betsy died in 1836 and Joseph married Mary Adair in Dromara Presbyterian Church.

“Joseph was a weaver and lived in Lisnacurran in 1856.”

It was in that same year that newlyweds David and Elizabeth and much of their immediate family took ship in search of pastures new - New York in fact.

“David and Elizabeth were married in Dromore Presbyterian Church on 1 October 1856,” said Beth.

“Just a few weeks later they, along with Elizabeth’s father Joseph, stepmother Mary and brothers Thomas, George, Joseph and John, went to the United States.

“They first resided in New York state and then settled in Oakland, Maryland.”

With the 157th anniversary of her great-grandparents’ wedding fast approaching on October 1 this year, Beth is particularly keen to finally establish links with any of their remaining local descendants.

“I would so enjoy finding my family circles so we can get to know each other and share family stories, photographs, etc. through the mail or email,” she said.

If you can help Beth with her search she can be contacted by post at 1142 N. Jamestown Road, #209, Decatur, GA 30033 USA - or via email at [email protected].
