No surprises as Wilkinson wins on Castlewellan Road

LAST Tuesday night West Down Wheelers held a 10 mile TT on the Castlewellan Road in what was another very good turnout with 20 riders taking to the starting line.

Although conditions were dry it was a cold, windy night, nevertheless there were some very good times recorded. Fastest on the night was that man again, Paul Wilkinson. His time on the night of a 22.59 was a first class effort and one to feel proud about.

In second place was no surprise either, with a time of 24.07 Paul McManus was so close to a 23. No doubt he will get quicker each week.

He will have to as Mark Alexander's 24.33, Pete Savage’s 24.43 and Davy Cartmill’s 24.49 mean they are all breathing down on him.

Club race secretary Bunty Adamson says the way the guys are going this year is very pleasing. The first five riders’ times were very good, but Chrissy Hodgen is improving each week plus Jonny Kernaghan, James Adair and Mervyn Cantly are surely heading up the leader board.

Philly Hanna will have been glad to get under the half hour on a hard night and Chunker’s 26 will have put a smile on his face. It was all in all a good night’s racing and with another couple of Wheelers due to start soon it can only get better.

With the season well on the way many thanks go to the support team helpers, Bertie Wilkinson, John Mercer, Mervyn Maxwell, Bug McAfee, Billy Maxwell and timekeeper Derek Gamble.

Any rider not riding a race for one reason or other, especially the Road Races or Australian Pursuits, are asked to turn up and offer their help.

The club training runs are well attended on Thursdays and Saturdays but there’s room for more Wheelers. It will do you the world of good - just look how at those who are regular attendees are going.
