New girls impress again

The newly-formed Banbridge third team played their second ever home game in Gilford against Newry firsts and again put in a promising display against a more experienced sode.

The starting seven took to court without Captain Lisa Smith, who is still recovering from an injury picked up during the previous game.

Banbridge knew this was going to be a tough game but started with a positive and fighting attitude.

They fought hard with some good play but Newry’s tight defence and experience forced errors and allowed the visitors to take the lead.

A couple of changes were made at half time with Kay Kelly taking to court as GK and shooters Amy McCullough and Michelle Marshall replacing Jenny McGowan and Mona Lewis.

Keeping with a positive attitude, Bann carried on playing, but a strong Newry side soon forced errors again. Incredible interceptions from Newry’s defence made it impossible for Bann to pull back the deficit and that resulted in a final score of Bann 6 – 43 Newry.

Despite the scoreline, it was a great display of determination from Bann Thirds as they knew Newry would overshadow them form the first whistle.

Newry Firsts last year played in the division under the Premier League but were very unlucky to have been relegated down to their current league.

Even their Thirds are a very experienced team but it didn’t hinder Bann Thirds from doing their best.

The locals now look forward to their second match against Newry at the end of the season.

Well done girls, a great effort.
