BANBRIDGE Firsts secured a victory in the quarter-final of the Denise Prue Plate against Newry Firsts in Gilford Community Centre on Thursday February 7.
The game started at a very fast speed with both team eager to progress to the next round of the plate. Newry’s defence started extremely strong making it hard for Bann’s shooters to find space, but super feeds into the shooting circle allowed Bann to convert. Bann led by three goals at the end of the first quarter.
Bann started the second quarter with moral high. WD Debbie Evans was on top form forcing errors around Newry’s shooting circle and the attacking play of C Joanne Kerr and WA Lynn Donaldson allowed Banbridge to further extend their lead with well-placed feeds into the circle. The score was Bann 19–14 Newry at the end of the second quarter.
At half time Banbridge knew they had alot of work in the next two quarters to ensure Newry didn’t force the strong and determined home side to make mistakes. Only one change was made with Olivia Loy replacing Lynn Donaldson in WA.
Super defensive work from GK Cathy Buchanan, GD Amanda Johnston and WD Debbie Evans allowed Bann to steal missed opportunities from Newry’s unforced errors.
Excellent team play worked the ball down through the court to shooters Paula McBride and Sarah Porter. With 100% shooting stats already throughout the game Bann made full use of the counter attack. At quarter time Bann led by eight goals,
Banbridge started strong in the last quarter with fantastic defence in the circle. After several interceptions and tips of the ball by WD Debbie Evans the team were able to capitalise on this extending their lead. A determined Banbridge kept the momentum going and the final whistle seen Bann win by nine goals. A fantastic team effort with the final score Banbridge 35–26 Newry.
