NETBALL: Bann’s third team Downed in first game

Banbridge’s newly formed thirds squad kicked off their season with an away match to Downpatrick last Wednesday.

The extension of the club’s senior set-up is an exciting development.

The first quarter of their opening match started strong with all players working well together. Both teams played at a fast pace and kept a goal for goal score but Downpatrick managed to capitalise on one mistake at centre pass which ended the quarter with Down two goals ahead.

The second quarter saw Downpatrick come back stronger and with some unforced errors on Banns part, Down used this to their advantage and led this quarter 25-13.

Eager to pull back on some of these goals, Bann reshuffled the team. However, Downs strong defence and interceptions along with accurate effortless shooting, gave them a lead of 17 goals.

Final quarter, Downpatrick put on more fresh players. Again silly mistakes on Banns part paired with interceptions in their shooting circle, Down was able to extend their lead to finish the game 45-21. Too much for Bann to pull back.

A great effort from all our new club members, Amy McCullough, Jenny McGowan, Michelle Marshal, Maxine Brooks, Michelle Foster, Maxine Williamson and Karen Waddell, as well as past players Ingrid Orr, Mona Lewis, Leanne Burns and Lisa Smith.

Even though Bann lost this match, it is a promising start to the season for this new upcoming team.
