Nervy end to game for Thirds

Moneyslane Thirds 4

ON a very wet Saturday afternoon Slane took on Maghera at Dromore Leisure Centre in a Newcastle League clash.

Slane started off very positively and had Maghera on the back foot from the kick off. This paid off dividends when David Gamble headed the ball forward and Jordan Fairley latched onto it very quickly and coolly lofted it over the advancing keeper.

Against the run off play Maghera got a penalty for hand ball in the box but they didn’t capitalise when their spot kick rebounded off the post and out for a throw in. The home side did get the equaliser shortly after when a mix up in the Slane defence saw the ball roll to the back post for a simple tap in.

Slane again took the lead when their right midfielder Stuart ‘Rusty’ Maginess brilliantly flicked the ball into the far corner of the Maghera net.

The second half had more to come from both teams but again Maghera got their equaliser when a corner was swung towards the edge of the 18 yard box and their central mid fielder riffled it into the top corner.

All credit to Slane, they again pressed hard for the lead and this came about when centre forward Norman Quinn was upended in the box and the Slane captain, Gary Hanna made no mistake from the spot kick.

The same player got his second of the day not long after when he superbly controlled shot on the edge of the box.

Maghera again replied when their central midfielder broke into the box and was taken down in the process resulting in a penalty that was converted.

With only a few minutes left Maghera stepped it up but Slane’s defence of Joe Porter. Matty Kernaghan, Clive Hamilton and Mark McCully stood firm .
