Paul’s miraculous shot keeps him in the mixed foursomes

It’s quarter final time in the Mixed Foursomes Championship at Banbridge Golf Club.

The holders, Rory Madeley and Megan Whan, are still there. I’m sure Megan got great satisfaction from beating her parents.

The Magennis family encounter went to the tie hole. Paul and Anne came out on top but they were a shade fortunate. Susan and Thomas were 1 up after 15 and looked all set to go dormie at the 16th. Paul had to take a drop from the water for his fourth shot and, would you believe it, he hit his ball into the far bank, it ricocheted back and rolled into the hole for a winning par.

The first round results are as follows:

Lee and Vera Willdridge beat John McDowell and Denise Nelson 4 and 3.

Karen Heslip and Cecil Wilson beat David and Mary Joe Thompson 3 and 1.

Denise and Gerry McBrien beat Declan and Mary Dooher 3 and 1.

Sherwin and Karen Curran beat Thomas Nelson and Bronagh Sands 6 and 5.

Rory Madeley and Megan Whan beat Kenny and Diana Whan 6 and 5.

Eamon and Gina McConville beat Kathleen and Barry Smyth.

Brendan Meade and Marianne Nelson beat Mildred and Richard Hodgett 6 and 5.

Paul and Anne Magennis beat Susan and Thomas Magennis at the 19th.
