The eighth round of the Mid-Ulster Senior Alliance was played at Spa Golf Club last Tuesday.
Spa is a beautiful course but it is extremely long. Any score over 30 points is very respectable.
Tony Ewbanks was the stand-in captain for the day and he was looking for four scores in the 30’s.
Verdun Bond was saving himself for the matchplay final the next day and he played conservatively for 29 points.
Bobby Geddis, Tom Fee and Seamus McGrath managed to get to 32 points each but, if the truth be known, they should have done better.
Peter Hillen was comfortably in the top four with 33 points. There were only two Banbridge players left to come in, Norman Doak and Patrick McAleenan.
Could they rescue the situation or would the course prove too difficult for them?
Everyone was spellbound when they revealed their scores. Norman had 39 points and Patrick had 40 points. These were two of the best scores of the day.
The Banbridge team total was an excellent 144 and the team are now in sixth place overall. The ninth round will be played at Lurgan on Friday the 11th of September and the grand finale will be at Tandragee.
