Local girl Olivia Mehaffey is off to take on the cream of Europe’s golfing talent this week.

And she’s hoping she can show she’s up there with the best of them.

Olivia jetted off to Austria early on Sunday to take part in the International European Ladies’ Amateur Championship at Murhof GC

The tournament begins on Wednesday and runs until Saturday with the title being played for over four rounds of stroke-play.

Olivia, now the world number 37, is targetting a top finish.

She said: “I’m looking forward to it, it’s one of the best field of the year so I can’t wait to play alongside them and see where I stand.

“I’ve been playing solidly recently, posted a few good scores and my last round in Denmark was 69 so it’s nice to come into this week feeling confident.”

Olivia is fresh off the back of the European Team Championships, in which Ireland lost out 4-3 to England in the quarter-finals.

Nonetheless, it has been a fantastic season so far for the 17 year-old.

She made history by winning three coveted titles, three weeks in a row. First of all, she claimed the Irish Girls U18 Open Strokeplay Championship for the third year in a row before also claiming the prestigious Helen Holm Scottish Open Stroke Play Championship and the Welsh Open.

She also played in the Vagliano Trophy and, after this week’s European Championships, the hard work continues with the girls home internationals at the start of August, followed by the Girls’ British Open Amateur Championship, which is the final qualification stage for September’s Junior Solheim Cup.

Olivia is placed in the all important top six of the European team’s qualifying process. The tournament will be played before September’s Solheim Cup at the same course and would prove another feather in Mehaffey’s cap.
