The curtain has come down once again on the West Down Wheelers cycling season.
The final race of 2014 whizzed through the streets last Tuesday night at a hillclimb on the very tough Tonaghmore Rd.
The man on the night was Darren ‘Muscles’ Lynass. He won the event for the second year in a row although not beating his time of last year which is still a club record.
In second place was Paul Wilkinson. He was just a few seconds behind with Matt McKinstry third.
So that’s it over for another very successful year’s racing. The Wheelers hold 24 races throughout the year including four Road Races, four Australian Pursuits, Ten 10 mile TTs, three circuits TTs, one 25 mile TT and one Hillclimb plus the very successful West Down GP, the Eric Maxwell 10 mile TT and the popular run round the coast in February for charity.
With this being the club’s 25th Anniversary year, they will be bringing out a new Hoody to go with it hopefully a royal blue one. As well as that, the club racing gear will have a different look to it for next year’s racing, and it looks like they will have a few more new faces racing in those new club colours next year.
A club end of year statement said: “The committee of West Down Wheelers would like to thank everyone involved in this year’s racing plus the PSNI for all their help in marshalling duties in our open races, especially Allister Campbell for organising it all.
“Would all members please note there will be a meeting in the Albert next Monday night at 7.30pm. We have a lot to discuss; the prize giving and dinner, winter club runs, new gear, new hoodys etc. You need to be there to have your say.
“Anyone looking to join can come along. You will get a warm welcome. Our club runs will start up again on Saturday 20 September leaving Tescos at 9pm. These will be two to four hour runs at a nice 16 AVG with a Tea stop for the first couple of months.
“Allister McCourt will be updating and keeping our web page up to scratch starting in the next week or two. We would like all the members to get involved in what the club are trying to do. Remember it’s everyone in the the club that makes it a club.”
