Down Ladies miss out on the title after scorching Ulster Final day

Celtic Park in Derry was the venue for the 2013 TG4 Ladies Ulster Final on Sunday on an absolute scorcher of a day.

Down opened the scoring when Grainne McClean stepped up to put a free over the bar.

Fermanagh regained their form ten minutes in and a wide by the Erne girls was quickly followed by a concise goal 12 minutes in.

Captain Sinead Fegan was pushed in the back, and at the same time laid the ball off to Cunningham who hit a tremendous point.

Within minutes the Ballymartin youngster was back on the score sheet again, with another fine point from play.

A pointed free by Grainne McClean saw Down go in front at this stage by one, and they looked the better side.

But disaster struck for Down and in an unprecedented two minutes of play Fermanagh scored an amazing three goals and a point.

Clara Fitzpatrick showed the way with a great point from play and Down went in at the break with a nine point deficit.

Sinead Fegan dispossessed a Fermanagh player, passed to Cunningham who in turn laid it off to Trainor, who put it over the bar.

At this stage Natasha Ferris also took a great point from play followed by one from Orla Fegan and her sister Sinead took a fine point also.

Further were scores by Megan Doherty from play and Down stalwart Lisa Morgan.

Clara Fitzpatrick brought the defecit down to four points but it wasn’t to be Down’s day.

Fermanagh scored two quick points in quick succession, and played a possession game happy to let the seconds tick away and become the deserved Ulster Champions 2013.
