The Banbridge Ulster Fourball team, captained by Merton McDowell, played the first leg of their first round match last Saturday evening.
Their opponents made the long journey from Letterkenny but thei trip home was made to feel that little bit shorter after they emerged with an impressive 3-2 victory.
The Donegal men came well prepared and they proved to be very tough opposition for Merton’s team. Merton was hoping for a 4-1 win or even better. He was disappointed.
Sean McGreevey and Victor McNeill got Banbridge off to the perfect start with a two and one win.
Gavin Greer and Gerry Blevins were surprisingly beaten five and four.
Billy Clarke and Will Dickson did not expect to lose four and three.
Aidan Lavery and John Convery lost a close match by two and one.
There was some joy for the local team when Robert Haire and Stephen Downey won the fifth and final game by five and four.
A 2-3 defeat was a big shock for the Banbridge team. They will need a miracle on Sunday at Letterkenny in order to progress to round two. Miracles do happen but not very often. We will see.
