The Sam Rutherford team played Clover Hill at home last week.
Clover Hill are a very competitive team in this handicap section and Banbridge had to battle all the way at the Huntly Road to secure an advantage to travel to the second leg next Friday.
Peter Hillen and Adam McGregor battled to a 2 hole win - 2up after nine and a superb tee shot at the 10th hole to 6” from Peter Hillen (he is too modest to describe this to me himself) secured a 2 holes victory.
Malcolm Russell and Cathal O’Neill won 1 up. Rory Simpson and Callum Barnes showed their class with a 2 holes victory while James Wilson and Richard Coburn lost by 2 holes.
Banbridge have a 3 hole lead going to Clover Hill next week – hopefully the greensome format will allow the Banbridge men to coast to victory.
A depleted Senior Cup team travelled to Slieve Russell for the Ulster qualifying section.
Both Rory Leonard and Jim Carville were sorely missed from this team and Banbridge struggled at the Co Cavan venue.
GUI results from the venue are not available but Banbridge sources confirm that we had a bad day at the office, with a couple of scores creeping into the 70’s and the remainder not good enough at this level. This will only be a temporary blip at the highest level of amateur golf for Banbridge Golf Club.
