The qualifying rounds in the GUI Junior Cup were played last Sunday.
Banbridge were drawn to play at Portadown along with 11 other teams.
Four would qualify for the first round of matchplay.
Hugo Downey is the Banbridge team captain, as he was ten years ago when Banbridge won the All-Ireland title at Enniscrone. What a memorable day that was!
Hugo would dearly love to see a repeat, as would we all.
The first stage was successfully negotiated.
Matthew Mallon shot a 75. Conor Mulholland had a 77. Kieran Magennis and Jamie Thompson both had 78’s. Mark McCoy finished with an 81.
The four best cards gave Banbridge a team score of 308.
Portadown led the qualifiers with a score of 307. Warrenpoint and Banbridge both had 308. Ardglass took the fourth spot with 310.
In the first round of matchplay, Banbridge will play Warrenpoint at the neutral venue of Portadown.
Could this team possibly match the exploits of the 2006 team? It won’t be Hugo Downey’s fault if they don’t.
