Banbridge Angling Club have won the Friendship Cup for the third year in a row.
The locals had carried over a 7.54lbs lead from April’s first leg and managed to bolster their position with a small victory in the second leg to secure the overall victory.
Armagh hosted the second leg at Shaw’s Lake last month, providing the Bann lads with a warm welcome.
Weather conditions on the day were bright, with a blustery wind blowing on the lake. However, this did not spoil the excellent fishing to be had for both teams.
Even in the bright sunshine, both teams managed in the main to catch their bags of three fish, which demonstrated the skills and the abilities of the two teams competing.
Anglers from both teams fished hard all day, with some excellent fish caught. At lunchtime, both teams took a break, and from rough estimates, it was far too close to call which team was in the lead, with all team members from both teams recording good fish caught.
After lunch, fishing did slow slightly although it did not really affect the quality of the fish caught.
At 4.30pm, the whistle was blown and angling finished for the day. Both teams were bringing up great bags of rainbow trout. Everyone commented on how good the quality and how hard these fish fought. All of the trout had beautiful full tails.
All that was left then, was to tot up the scores. Aidan Donnelly (Armagh) and Martin Dynes (Banbridge) began the weigh in.
Banbridge bags were as follows:
Martin Dynes 3.98lbs, Colin Crothers 5.92lbs, Noel Burns 4.19lbs, Brian Molloy 4.12lbs, Rodger McClements 4.06lbs, Sam Grant 3.94lbs, Adrian McAnarney 4.05lbs, Jim Warren 3.62lbs, Trevor Jones 4.59lbs and Malachy McAleenan 2.79lbs.
Total Banbridge weight on the day was 41.26lbs and the team’s total for both legs was 71.66lbs.
Armagh bags were as follows:
Niall Hardy 4.36lbs, Steve Brooke’s 3.22lbs, Aidan Donnelly 3.56lbs, Glenn Symonds 4.21lbs, Cathal Doyle 4.24lbs, Nigel Jennings 4.89lbs, Trevor Dickson 4.15lbs, Peter Smith 4.44lbs, Ashley McMullan 4.18lbs and Paul McKillen 3.67lbs.
Armagh’s total weight on the day was 40.82lbs and their total for both legs was 63.63lbs
