Moneyslane still challenging for title

Rectory Rangers 1

Moneyslane 3

MONEYSLANE’S first team travelled to Portadown at the weekend to play Rectory in the league.

It was a must win game for Slane to keep their title hopes and promotion hopes alive with this division very tight at the top.

Slane pushed forward from the first whistle but found the Rectory defence stubborn and hard to break down. There was some meaty tackles flying in and Slane could have had a spot kick when Sterritt was brought down from behind in the box but the referee waved play on.

Twenty minutes in and a defensive error by Rectory let Sterritt in. He lobbed the keeper from 25 yards out for the opening goal.

Davenport rifled in a free kick that the keeper saved and Graham followed in but hit the side netting with his shot.

Moffett was slotted through and found himself one on one with the keeper who pulled off a great save with his feet to deny the player/manager his goal. The home side equalised with a well taken goal on the half hour when the big striker hammered a shot into the top corner.

Slane came out determined to get their noses in front and pushed the home defence deep into their own half early on. Again chances went a begging and Slane were not finishing of in front of goal.

Slane upped the tempo and a corner was nodded home by Niblock to put Slane in front. The home side did pressurise Slane and were dangerous from the long throws.

With 10 minutes to go Davenport popped up to convert and take the pressure off and two minutes later Slane were awarded a penalty but Sterritt hit it over the top.

Best on the day for Slane was John Davenport.
