Mixed results for Rathfriland U9s

LAST Tuesday evening Rathfriland U9s played three games in their cup competition.

The cup is played on a league format with the top half of the table playing against each. Having finished in respectable sixth position at their first attempt Rathfriland sat comfortably in the top half of the table.

Warrenpoint 2

In their first game Rathfriland game up against a very well organised Warrenpoint team and right from the word go were very competitive.

Continuing from where they left off last week Rathfriland battled hard and took the game to Warrenpoint. The ‘Point were well organised and strong and took the lead towards the end of the first half.

Rathfriland did not let this deter them and battled back with Ethan Copes scoring a terrific equalising goal. Warrenpoint kept battling and scored the winner in the dieing minutes.

This was a terrific performance from Rathfriland and they were unlucky not to take something from the game.

Midway Colts 1

Midway Colts began the game very brightly and immediately put the Rathfriland defence under pressure. With a mixture of good goalkeeping by Joshua Ingram, good defending and a charmed goal line Midway were unable to take any of their chances.

Having weathered the initial storm Rathfriland began to come into the game more and just before halftime Brooke Chambers scored a thunderous shot to give Rathfriland the lead.

The second half began as the first finishes with Brooke Chambers one again firing in a terrific shot. Midway battled pulled one back to make the final minutes difficult for Rathfriland who eventually ran out the winners 2 -1 winners.

Moneyslane 1

In their final game of the evening Rathfriland took on their local rivals Moneyslane.

This was a midfield battle with both teams competing well but neither team created many chances. Moneyslane took the lead towards the end of the first half but Rathfriland did not let their heads drop.

In the second half Rathfriland started brightly again and were rewarded when Ethan Copes fired a stunning shot into the top corner giving the Moneyslane keeper no chance.

The final minutes of the game were once again played out in midfield with the points being shred at the final whistle.
