Malcolm, Kieran and Noel pick up Sweep victories

Malcolm, a better than average 12 handicapper, played the 13 holes of the Saturday Sweep in one under par gross, a round that included two twos. That gave Malcolm a superb total of 36 points, which was the best score of the day. Malcolm took top spot but there were still six other prizes up for grabs.

Cathal McNiff (12) seems to be enjoying his new set of irons as he won the low section with 34 points. Philip Mallon (10) was runner-up in the low section with 33 points.

Richard Coburn (16), an emerging star at the golf club, won the middle section, equalling Malcolm’s winning score. Michael Gillen (17), who is enjoying a purple patch, was the runner-up with 32 points. Gordon Enderson (25) came out on top in a very competitive high section. His winning score was 35 points. Johnny McKinstrey (25), armed with a brand new driver, was runner-up with 33 points.

Meanwhile, Kieran McGreevey (21) picked up his second Sunday Sweep win of the year. He won the first way back on 6th January. During the course of the year, Kieran had four second place finishes and three third places before he managed to win again on 8th December. His winning score in January was nett 27.5. This score was equalled by Graham Shannon but never beaten. His winning score this time was a nett 29.5, still very good. Michael McGreevey (12) was runner-up with a nett 31 and Johnny McKinstrey (25) was third with a nett 31.5.

There was a little more interest than usual in the Thursday Sweep because the members of the PIGS society were playing for the John Smyth Memorial Trophy.

Noel Cruikshanks (14) was delighted to win both the Sweep and the Trophy. John was a long-time member of the PIGS and his untimely death was a great shock to all his friends in the society. Noel scored 35 points and he needed every one of them because there were two other players right on his heels.

Peter Hillen (11) was placed second with his 34 points and Brian Mulholland (10) was third, also with 34 points.
