Magill comes off the bench to win it for Seconds

SUPER-SUB Peter Magill came off the bench on Saturday to score a sensational goal and earn Dromore Amateurs Seconds, sponsored by McDonald’s Mace, a superb 2-1 victory down in Monkstown.

With the sides locked at 1-1, and Dromore pushing hard for a winner against their 10-man hosts, Magill popped up on 75 minutes with a sweetly struck half-volley from 20 yards which fizzed into the net before the Newtownabbey netminder could even move.

It was an excellent strike which gave the Amateurs a deserved win - although the home side will rue a moment of indiscipline on the half-hour mark when they had a man red-carded for an off-the-ball incident.

Newtownabbey were leading 1-0 at the time courtesy of a controversial penalty for an alleged hand ball but the red card changed everything and Dromore sensed that an upset was on the cards.

In the second half, emergency goalkeeper Billy Coulter had to be alert to deny Newtowabbey extending their lead but Dromore soon settled and got themselves back on level terms when captain Colin Harper rose highest at the back post to power home a Gareth Hill corner.

Shortly afterwards came that superb Magill strike and then Dromore weathered some late pressure to claim a memorable victory at what is traditionally a difficult venue.

Team: B Coulter, R McMurray, R Ward, D McCauley, S Curran, C Harper, G Hill, M Beattie, N Walsh, P Smith, M Cichy. Subs: P Magill, A McCartan.

This week, the Amateurs play at home against Carryduff before their final game of the season on Tuesday night away to Queen’s Colts.
