Local athletes at Greenmount races

GREENMOUNT Campus in Antrim was the setting last weekend for the International Cross Country, incorporating the McCain UK Cross Country Challenge series and the Celtic International, with a male veterans' race, age group races and primary school races for boys and girls.

It was a great day’s competition all round held on a superb course and Dromore Athletic Club had some of their athletes taking part who more than held their own against top quality opposition.

The day started off with the U13 girls 1800m race and two super runs from Laura Greer in 10th and Laura Silcock on her debut for the Dromore club in 36th.

The U13 boys race was over the same distance and again another great performance came this time from Timothy McCracken in 21st.

Ryan McDermott was running this time in his Ulster colours as he was representing the province in the U20 men’s 5600m race. Although not back to full fitness after a bout of the cold he gave his all and had a very good run for 20th in a high quality field which was the order of the day.

Dromore got on the winners rostrum in the primary school races. In the girls 1100m race Rebekah Nixon gave a fantastic performance where she lead from gun to tape for an excellent win to go alongside her win the previous week at the Moria Cross Country races.

Dromore had their biggest turnout on the day in the male veterans 7400m race and again all the athletes had great runs, led home by Brian McKee in eighth and third O45.

Michael Stewart was 16th, Nigel Grier 24th, Neil Dillon 50th, Willie Weir 53rd and second O60 while David Allen was 58th.
