Late Cairns winner lifts Bann Ladies up to third

Banbridge Ladies gained three valuable points with a 2-1 victory away to a cold and icy Ballyclare on Saturday.

With the rest of Banbridge sport given the red card, the girls braved the conditions and got their rewards for it thanks to goals from Elayne Brown and Rachel Cairns.

Banbridge battled hard all over the pitch with a very strong start, with the forward line of Rachel Cairns, Cathy Rees and Amy Atkinson putting the Ballyclare defence to test with some very narrow misses saved by a strong Ballyclare goalkeeper.

Ballyclare were awarded a penalty corner and they took full advantage as the ball was deflected in at the back post, to give the hosts the lead.

However, the Bann ladies did not give up and fought hard with some lovely passing between the midfield and forward line, which led to a penalty corne, converted by Elayne Brown to level the scores at 1-1 at half-time.

With a positive and encouraging team-talk from Coach Robin Madeley, the girls went into the second half ready to take home the three points. Ballyclare had a few breaks through the middle of the pitch but with Banbridge’s strong defence and some great saves from goalkeeper Sarah McCabe they managed to hold out the hosts.

Banbridge ladies continued to push on, putting the Ballyclare defence under a lot of pressure. They got their just rewards as Rachel Cairns skillfully slotted the ball past the keeper bringing the final result to 2-1.

Banbridge ladies finished strong with a great performance and a deserved three points.
